SYNTHETIC TURF MAINTENANCE AND USER GUIDE

B&C Skandinavia Sport

Quality & Performance for Professional Sports Surfaces

Introduction and Importance of Proper Maintenance

Synthetic turf systems supplied by B&C Skandinavia Sport are designed to withstand demanding climatic conditions and intensive use while maintaining high standards of performance, safety, playing quality, and appearance.

To preserve the surface's shock-absorption properties, playing characteristics, structural integrity, and service life, and to maintain applicable warranty conditions, it is essential that the recommended use, cleaning, inspection, and maintenance procedures are followed.

Regular and correct maintenance protects the investment and contributes significantly to extending the functional service life of the synthetic turf system.

1. Brushing and Surface Cleaning

1.1 Initial Installation Period

During the first months following installation, the infill material will gradually settle and become evenly distributed throughout the synthetic turf system.

Regular brushing during this period is important to ensure an even distribution of infill and to help keep the synthetic turf fibres upright.

1.2 Recommended Maintenance Intervals

  • Normal use: Brush every 3–4 weeks.

  • Intensive use: Brush every 1–2 weeks.

Maintenance frequency may need to be increased depending on usage intensity, weather conditions, the construction of the pitch, and the type of infill material used.

1.3 Removal of Foreign Objects

Leaves, branches, stones, glass, cigarette butts, chewing gum, and other foreign objects must be removed from the surface as soon as possible.

Foreign objects may damage the synthetic turf fibres, affect playing performance, and, in certain circumstances, cause damage to underlying components of the pitch system.

1.4 Prevention of Dust and Compaction

The accumulation of dust, dirt, and other particles may, over time, contribute to infill compaction and result in a harder playing surface.

Small areas may be maintained using a suitable stiff plastic brush. For larger and professional pitches, the use of approved mechanical brushing and maintenance equipment from B&C Skandinavia Sport is recommended.

2. Footwear and Use of the Pitch

2.1 Approved Footwear

Only football footwear suitable for synthetic turf surfaces should be used.

Examples include:

  • AG (Artificial Grass) football boots

  • TF (Turf) football shoes

Footwear selection must always comply with the technical specifications of the particular pitch and the recommendations of the manufacturer or supplier.

2.2 Prohibited Footwear

The following types of footwear must not be used on the pitch:

  • Football boots with metal studs or metal screw-in studs

  • Footwear with sharp or unsuitable studs

  • Stiletto heels or other pointed heels

  • Ordinary street footwear where it may cause damage to the synthetic turf system

Unsuitable footwear may cause excessive loading and damage to the synthetic turf fibres, infill material, and underlying layers of the pitch construction.

3. Infill Replenishment – Granules and Sand

Infill material may be lost over time as a result of snow clearance, heavy rainfall, wind, cleaning operations, and intensive use.

If a reduction in the level of granules or other infill material is detected, the missing material must be replenished as soon as possible using material approved for the specific synthetic turf system.

An adequate level of infill is essential for:

  • supporting the synthetic turf fibres;

  • maintaining shock-absorption properties;

  • maintaining surface stability;

  • preserving the intended playing characteristics of the pitch.

Important

The pitch should not be used for extended periods if the infill level has been significantly reduced.

Insufficient infill may increase the load on the synthetic turf fibres, resulting in premature fibre breakage and damage. It may also affect applicable warranty conditions.

4. Chemicals, Fuels, Oils and Solvents

Petrol, diesel, paraffin, acids, oils, solvents, and other strong or aggressive chemicals must never come into contact with the synthetic turf system.

Oil-based solvents or other unapproved chemicals must not be used for stain removal or cleaning.

Only cleaning products and methods approved or recommended by B&C Skandinavia Sport may be used for cleaning or stain removal.

In the event of a fuel, oil, or chemical spill, the following emergency spill response procedure must be followed immediately.

4.1 Emergency Spill Response Procedure

If fuel, oil, chemicals, or any potentially harmful liquid is spilled on the synthetic turf, immediate action must be taken to prevent the substance from spreading or penetrating the synthetic turf system and its underlying layers.

Step 1 – Restrict access to the affected area

Immediately secure the affected area.

Prevent players, staff, visitors, and other persons from entering the spill area.

Step 2 – Stop the source of the spill

Where it is safe to do so, stop the equipment or source causing the spill and prevent further leakage.

Do not take any action that may create a risk to personal safety.

Step 3 – Prevent the spill from spreading

Prevent the liquid from spreading over a larger area or penetrating into the underlying layers of the synthetic turf system.

Use an appropriate absorbent material.

Do not brush, wipe, or wash the substance in a manner that may spread it further.

Step 4 – Apply suitable absorbent material

Use suitable absorbent material to absorb the spilled liquid as quickly as possible.

Used absorbent material and contaminated waste must be collected and disposed of in accordance with applicable environmental and waste-management regulations.

Step 5 – Do not use high-pressure water

In the event of a fuel, oil, or chemical spill, high-pressure water or large quantities of water must not be used unless specifically instructed by authorised personnel.

Water may carry the spilled substance into the underlying layers or drainage system.

Step 6 – Inspect the affected area

Once the spill has been removed, the following should be inspected:

  • Synthetic turf fibres

  • Infill material

  • Seams and joints

  • Surface condition

  • Surrounding areas

  • Drainage system, where relevant

If any damage, discolouration, fibre deformation, or chemical contamination is identified, the affected area must not be used until it has been assessed.

Step 7 – Contact B&C Skandinavia Sport

In the event of a petrol, diesel, oil, solvent, acid, or other chemical spill, B&C Skandinavia Sport must be notified.

If the substance may have reached the infill or underlying layers, no cleaning or repair work should be undertaken until the situation has been professionally assessed.

Important Safety Warning

If the identity of the spilled substance is unknown:

  • Do not touch the substance directly.

  • Do not mix the substance with other chemicals.

  • Do not carry out unauthorised cleaning.

  • Keep the affected area closed.

  • Follow the applicable safety procedures and the relevant Safety Data Sheet (SDS).

The following must never be used:

  • Petrol- or solvent-based cleaning products

  • Oil-based solvents

  • Unapproved chemical cleaning products

  • Open flames or heat sources

  • Unauthorised high-pressure washing

  • Aggressive brushing that may spread the spilled substance

If there is any uncertainty regarding the type, quantity, or chemical composition of the spill, the pitch must remain closed and professional assistance must be obtained.

5. Mechanical Damage and Excessive Loads

The synthetic turf system must be protected against unnecessary mechanical stress and physical damage.

The following activities are prohibited:

  • Using sharp or pointed objects that may cut or puncture the synthetic turf surface

  • Lifting, folding, or pulling the synthetic turf at edges or seams

  • Placing heavy machinery, scaffolding, staging, or similar equipment directly on the synthetic turf without suitable and approved load-distribution protection

  • Concentrating pedestrian traffic for extended periods in restricted areas during events

For events or activities involving exceptional loads, suitable surface protection and load-distribution systems must be used.

6. Watering and Temperature Control

During hot summer conditions, light watering of the pitch after sunset may help reduce surface temperature and improve playing comfort.

Watering may contribute to:

  • Lower surface temperature

  • Reduced friction between players and the synthetic turf

  • Reduced risk of skin abrasions and synthetic turf burns during sliding tackles

  • Improved ball movement

  • Increased playing comfort

The amount and frequency of watering must be adapted to local weather conditions, the construction of the pitch, and the manufacturer's recommendations.

Excessive or uncontrolled watering should be avoided.

7. Fire and Heat Safety

Synthetic turf systems contain synthetic materials that may be damaged by high temperatures and open flames.

The following are strictly prohibited on or immediately adjacent to the pitch:

  • Open flames

  • Fireworks and other pyrotechnic products

  • Barbecues or other open heat sources

  • Smoking and the use of tobacco products

Heat sources must not be positioned in a manner that exposes the synthetic turf fibres or other components of the pitch system to direct or indirect excessive heat.

During events, appropriate safety measures must be implemented to prevent hot objects, sparks, or flames from coming into contact with the synthetic turf system.

8. Authorised Service and Maintenance

8.1 Repairs and Installation Work

Installation work, seam repairs, replacement of damaged synthetic turf sections, and technical repairs or modifications must only be carried out by B&C Skandinavia Sport or personnel expressly authorised by B&C Skandinavia Sport.

Unauthorised modifications or repairs may affect the performance, safety, structural integrity, and applicable warranty conditions of the pitch.

8.2 Periodic Professional Maintenance

To maintain pitch performance and ensure controlled wear and long-term functionality, the pitch should undergo a professional comprehensive maintenance service at least every six months, or in accordance with the applicable maintenance and service agreement with B&C Skandinavia Sport.

Professional maintenance should include, where applicable, inspection of:

  • Synthetic turf fibres

  • Infill level and distribution

  • Surface condition

  • Seams and joints

  • Other relevant components of the pitch system

Any damage, abnormal condition, or deviation identified during inspection should be addressed as soon as possible.

Early intervention helps prevent further deterioration and may reduce future repair requirements and costs.

9. General Safety and Use Requirements

To ensure safe and long-term use of the pitch, the following basic requirements must always be observed.
